Parliament Hill School

September 2024

About

With stunning grounds on the edge of Hampstead Heath, Parliament Hill School is a fully comprehensive girls’ school. The 1,250 students range from 11 to 18 and it has a mixed sixth form which is part of LaSWAP consortium. This is a high achieving school with a feminist mission. It raised money (including from Power Up North London’s Community Energy Fund) to plant a feminist orchard, with fruit trees dedicated to pioneering women.

Funding & delivery

Power Up North London (PUNL) has today announced it has received a £50,000 investment from the King’s Cross Central Limited Partnership (KCCLP) – owners of the King’s Cross estate – to part-fund more than 200 solar panels for a Somers Town school. The solar panels will be installed on Parliament Hill School this summer and is one of two planned arrays by PUNL in the area as part of its Solar Schools project. The £50,000 investment from KCCLP brings the total amount raised so far to £131,680. This includes around £60,000 from community investors and £20,000 from Somers Town Community Sports Centre. In addition to the £130,000 it raised from the share offer, PUNL has also received £75,000 in funding: £50,000 from Camden Council’s Camden Climate Fund, and £25,000 from the Mayor of London’s Somers Town Future Neighbourhoods pioneering initiative.

Benefits & impact

Once up and running, the 90.3kWp solar array will save over 15 tonnes of CO2 a year, equivalent to the carbon absorbed by over 700 trees, and will result in cheaper electricity for both schools.
PUNL’s Chair and lead for the project, Anna Woodeson welcomed this significant investment: “For the past nine years, PUNL has been working closely with local communities to help them embrace green energy and become less dependent on fossil fuels. This generous investment from the King’s Cross Carbon Fund will fund the installation of over 200 solar panels at Regent High, resulting in cleaner energy as well as cheaper electricity bills.”
